“Oh! This sweater’s a turtleneck!”
In my house, this is what we say when something turns out to be way more complicated than we first thought.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what life feels like. We think we’re handling a situation just fine… and suddenly, it expands into something bigger, more storied, and, maybe even a little overwhelming.
When life gets complicated — whether it’s a growing business, family responsibilities, or endless projects — Ayurveda recommends a simple, steady anchor that works beautifully: Routine.
My morning routine is a steady force in any storm (or turtleneck). I take care of my body and mind first — before the laptop opens, before my kid wakes up, before the day sweeps me away.
To me, the routine is downright sacred, and I honor it even when my to-do list is overflowing. In fact, I’d say I especially rely on it when the list is overflowing.
Routine is so helpful for balancing Vata (the energy that tends to spin out when life speeds up). And it doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s just sticking to the same activity at the same time, each day.
And when we focus on this steady routine first, before anything else in the morning, it’s much more likely to happen.
Here are a few simple ideas to start:
Choose one mini-routine that steadies you in the morning.
Sip a cup of tea mindfully before looking at your phone.
Stretch for 10 minutes after getting out of bed, or
Journal quietly for five minutes before the house wakes up.
Commit for two weeks. Do the same activity at the same time each morning.
You’ll see. Before long, you’ll see results. Your head will pop right out of that turtleneck; I promise. Staticky hair and all.
