Meet Agni - the fire in your belly
If I could teach you just one thing about Ayurveda, it would be Agni. Agni is the fire in your belly - your digestive fire, your source of vitality. It’s what gives you immunity, clear skin, a bright mind and good metabolism.
The best way I know how to explain Agni is through illustrations (of course).
So, meet Agni.
She’s a content little fire, sweetly burning with a steady inner glow and rosy cheeks. Here she is:
😊 Sama Agni
“Ahhh… everything’s just right.”
She likes warm, nourishing meals that arrive at regular times. Not too much, not too little. She likes a little movement, some fresh air, enough water, and a good night’s sleep. All of this keeps her gently kindled and warm. In Ayurveda, our happy balanced agni is called Sama Agni.
But then… you know… life happens. We get busy, distracted, stressed. We skip breakfast because we’re not hungry. We nibble lunch standing over the kitchen counter. We work through dinner, then realize it’s 9 o’clock and we’re starving. We snack all afternoon. We don’t move much. We stay up too late.
Poor agni.
😴 Manda Agni
“I’m done…”
She’s trying her best, but the fire just isn’t burning bright anymore. Ayurveda calls this Manda Agni — a weak digestive fire. When this happens, you probably won’t feel hungry at mealtimes, or you might feel tired a lot. You could get constipated or bloated, gassy or other not-so-hot symptoms.
Then there’s a confused fire:
😵💫 Vishama Agni
“Wait… are we eating? Aren’t we eating?”
Some days she’s brilliant. Some days she’s barely hanging on.
One morning you’re starving. The next, breakfast doesn’t sound appealing at all. Sometimes you digest everything just fine. Other days, the very same meal leaves you bloated. This often happens after late nights, lots of travel, or chronic stress. Poor Agni never quite knows what’s coming next, so she can’t settle into a steady rhythm. She’s all over the place.
Ayurveda calls this Vishama Agni — an irregular digestive fire.
And lastly, there’s one final possibility:
🔥 Tikshna Agni
“FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!”
Stand back — she’s fierce! Too much heat, lots of spicy or fried foods, acidic foods, irregular meals. She’s burning the candle at both ends. So you might feel ravenously hungry, get acid reflux or heartburn, or feel like everything is moving through your system just a little too quickly.
In Ayurveda, this fervid fire is called Tikshna Agni. No one wants that.
So the goal is
a happy just-right fire.
Meals about the same time every day. Food that doesn’t put her out or burn her up. Stopping when you’re about three-quarters full so she has room to work her fiery magic. Movement to keep her energized. A little rhythm to help her hum along.
It’s actually pretty simple when it comes down to it.
When Agni is happy, SO many things fall into place within your body and mind. Your energy steadies. You have killer digestion. Your mind clears. Your creativity has room to flow. You guys, it’s so good! :)
If you’d like a little reminder, I made a printable “How to Keep Agni Happy” cheat sheet that you can stick on your fridge or tape somewhere you’ll see it often. Visuals always help me—I hope they’ll help you too.
And if your own little fire has been struggling lately, I’d love love love to help.
An Ayurvedic consultation is really just a conversation about your rhythms, your habits, and the clues your body has been giving you. Together we’ll figure out what’s feeding your fire… or what’s putting it out.
